The true cost of a missed call

You do not need a big study to know missed calls cost you money. Here is the arithmetic, using your own numbers.

You already know you miss calls. The useful question is what they are worth. And the answer does not need a big dataset - it needs three numbers from your own business.

The three numbers

  1. 1How many calls you miss in a normal week (check the unanswered log on your phone, you will be surprised)
  2. 2What share of enquiries you usually win
  3. 3Your average job value

Missed calls a week, times your close rate, times your average job value. That is what a quiet afternoon is costing you, every week, before you even think about the repeat work and referrals you lose when someone else picks up first.

  • 25

    missed calls a week (example)

  • 1 in 5

    you would win (example)

  • £650

    average job value (example)

  • £3,250

a month you do not see

That worked example uses round numbers on purpose - they are a starting point, not a claim. Put your own in and the figure is usually bigger than you expect, because nobody likes to admit how many calls actually ring out.

What to do about it

Answer the call in the first place, or text back within seconds when you genuinely cannot, and book the appointment during the same conversation rather than promising to call back. The third one is the step most businesses skip, and it is worth the most.
